Fast Facts about the Saints: Saint Faustina

Today would have been the Feast Day of Saint Maria Faustina if it were not Sunday.

Memorial: October 5
Born: 1905
Died: 1938
Lived: Poland

Best Known For:
On February 22, 1931, Saint Faustina saw a vision of Jesus were He was clutching His Sacred Heart with one hand and stretched out His other hand in blessing. From Jesus's heart flowed two rays, one red and one white. Jesus told Saint Faustina to make a painting of the image she had seen in her vision. This painting would be used to spread the devotion of His Sacred Heart, known as Divine Mercy.

Interesting Facts:
The Divine Mercy devotion was actually banned in 1959. This was due to a misunderstanding brought about by translation difficulties. In 1978, Pope John Paul II lifted the ban and the devotion gathered a large following. Divine Mercy became increasingly popular after Saint Faustina was canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday (the first Sunday after Easter) in 2000.
