Recomended Catholic Books: Swimming with Scapulars and Gut Check

Although I am past my twenties, I found myself reading two autobiographies that were written for the young adult. As a father, I wanted to see how today’s youth are reacting towards being raised Catholic, and how they have come about accepting the religion into their lives. I have found two books that parents and young adults should read. Both books are about the journey each author takes while dealing with today’s culture and the religion they were raised. The writers end up living fully Catholic lives, but they take two very different roads in getting their.
One book I read about a year ago called, Swimming with Scapulars by Matthew Lickona. Matthew writes about how he kept his faith while being temped and made to feel different in the culture he is living. As the title suggests, this is a lighthearted look about being a young adult while keeping your faith.
I have just finished Gut Check by Tarek Saab. You may remember him from The Apprentice. I never did see the show, but I had heard good things about the book. Raised Catholic, Tarek became worldlier as he went through college and landed his first job. Although during this time he felt that there had to be something more and that he was not living like his ideal self. It is an interesting story about how he made it back to his Catholic beliefs and became the man he ideally wanted to be.
No matter if you are in your twenties, preparing to enter your twenties, or just wanting to know what Catholic twenty-somethings are experiencing, both books will end up giving you a good look at what is going on currently in a very precarious time in life.
