Indiana Jones and the Catholic Faith

One day, I was watching Raiders of the Lost Ark on television, when my son sat down next to me and start to watch with me. At first, I was tickled that my son and I were enjoying a movie together that was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. My son is six years old, and I quickly realized that there were parts that were just too intense for him. Luckily, he is a mature six, and understands when I have to edit television content by putting my hand over his eyes. Having the movie nearly memorized does have its advantages.
Since this first viewing, I have shown him excerpts from the other Indiana Jones moves (carefully chosen). My son and I have also caught a few episodes of the Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. He is now an Indy fanatic.
One day he asked me if Indiana Jones was catholic. I never really thought about it, and I told him that I didn’t know for sure. He mentioned that Indy and his father knew Latin. To him this was a sure giveaway. I did tell him that he might be. At the very least he was probably raised Christian, and pointed to the fact that he was familiar with what they taught in Sunday school. The first and third movies have more of a catholic feel. The first movie used the Ark of the Convenient, and the third movie had the Holy Grail and the Crusades theme running through it. We haven’t really focused on the second movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, because it is a little too dark.
Having told my son that the character might be Catholic was all that he needed to insist that Indy was Catholic. We bought an Indiana Jones hat at Disneyland and he now runs around the house as the Catholic Indy. That is fine with me. I’m his side kick, but that’s a whole other story.
